BEVERLY — Weston’s three senior golf captains — Jon Greb, Will Caro, and Nick Buenaventura — have been battling for individual honors all season, and yesterday was no different. The trio all shot in the 70s at the Division 3 state tournament, with Greb’s even-par 70 taking the individual championship and helping the Wildcats secure their third team title in four years.

Greb overcame a rough day with the putter at Beverly Golf & Tennis Club to capture the Division 3 individual crown for the second time in three years. He also won as a sophomore, and has committed to play at Brown University.

Greb’s score bested Caro, who shot 72 to tie Bishop Stang’s Connor Murphy for second. Buenaventura carded a 77 for a ninth-place finish.

Weston’s team total of 298 was 17 strokes better than Pembroke’s 315. With this year’s 16-0 finish, the Wildcats have gone 60-2 the last four seasons, with four Dual County League titles, four Division 3 sectional crowns, three state titles, and three individual championships.

“They’re focused, they listen to me,’’ said eighth-year coach Mary O’Brien. “Each team has had its strengths and weaknesses, but this team I can honestly say has been very strong. From the time these seniors stepped foot on the golf course their freshman year, they’ve really contributed a lot to the success of the program.’’

“[Yesterday] was just a really steady round for me,’’ said Greb. “There wasn’t a real turning point. It was definitely better ball-striking than putting, the putting was really rough. I had four or five three-putts.’’

Greb offset the three-putts with five birdies.

The three captains have developed a friendly rivalry.

“Everyone wants to win the player of the match award I give out to the low round after each match,’’ said O’Brien. “This year those three had three wins apiece. Any one of them could play as Number 1.
