Mar 9, 2012 02:52 PM

If you don't know the name Joseph Kony by now, you may be one of the few and far between. An advocacy group called Invisible Children has created the latest viral video called Kony 2012, a 30-minute piece about the brutal militia leader in Central Africa. Kony, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, has been accused of various human rights abuses including multiple murders and kidnapping children and forcing them to become child soldiers and sex slaves.

The video details these alleged abuses to raise global awareness on the issue and has already received more than 57 million views on YouTube, garnering widespread attention from young people, celebrities, and the media. But, some Ugandans, activists, and others are criticizing the project, saying that it oversimplifies the complex issues in the region, lacks historical context, and does not provide background on what made it possible for Kony to rise to such notoriety.
