Mark Roberts will visit Shakespeare & Company on Saturday.
Playwright and “Mike & Molly” showrunner Mark Roberts doesn’t expect Melissa McCarthy — who stars in his popular sitcom — to attend his talkback at Shakespeare & Company on Saturday. He figures that McCarthy is a bit too busy filming the Sandra Bullock comedy “The Heat” in Boston to make it out to Lenox for the matinee. “It sounds like they were having some misadventures,” Roberts said, wryly, about “The Heat,” referring to the recent MBTA bus accident and stabbing near the set. “Coming to see one of my plays is probably the farthest thing from her mind.” Roberts has a long resume in television. He wrote “Two and a Half Men” for years before creating “Mike & Molly.” But he remains a dedicated theater person. His two-person play, “Couples Counseling Killed Katie,” just ended a run in Los Angeles, and his dark tale “Parasite Drag” runs at Shakespeare & Co. through Sept. 2. Roberts says he’ll just be in for the talkback; he flies home at the end of the weekend so he can get back to work on “Mike & Molly.” Actors such as McCarthy are due back to the set in August. He warns that if you come out to see “Parasite Drag” because you love “M&M,” you shouldn’t expect a sitcom. “If television gets you there, that’s wonderful,” he said. “It’s much darker than they’ll find my television work. It’s got a lot of laughter, but laughter through pain.”
