Is Brookline hip?

Jul 19, 2012 06:46 AM

Apparently Coldwell Banker thinks it is.

Brookline is ranked in the top ten hippest places in the country to live, right alongside Manhattan, San Francisco, Seattle and Mountain View.

OK, to be completely accurate here, it is listed as one of the top ten cities for "social seekers." I initially read it and thought this meant social climbers, which makes a bit more sense, but no, that is not how Coldwell Banker defines the term.

Let's got straight to the press release.

The Best Places to Live for "Social Seekers" ... ranks places which are perfect for the hip, trendy and fun at heart - those who would rather go out than stay home any night of the week. The list was compiled based on a range of attributes such as, access to public transportation, high volume of bars and restaurants, happening nightlife and great entertainment.

Maybe someone got confused and meant Davis Square instead, I don't know.

Bob Kraft and John Henry both have big spreads in Brookline - nice guys but I never particularly thought of either one as hipsters

I don't think you have to be hip to live in Brookline, but you sure better have a few dollars in your wallet.

The median price of a house in Brookline, as of the end of June, was $1,137,500, according to The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman.

In fact, Brookline is No. 6 on the hipster list - fairly high up.

Here's Coldwell Banker's description of Brookline.

Just outside the city of Boston, Brookline maintains a unique identity with a mixture of urban and suburban lifestyles. Residents enjoy pedestrian-oriented shopping with a variety of boutique shops, taverns and cafes in mix of new and historic architecture.

Somehow it seems odd to put Brookline on the same list as Manhattan, which was ranked No. 1.
