A new survey from TomTom NV finds that 61 percent of people are planning a vacation getaway this summer, up from 56 percent last year.
“The road trip is alive and well with American travelers – 70 percent of people are planning to travel to their destination by car,” said TomTom, a provider of in-car location and navigation products. The company has major offices in Amsterdam and Concord.
While travel is projected to be up, staying within a vacation budget is a priority for most travelers. TomTom’s survey found that 59 percent of people will spend less than $1,200 in total on their vacations, the company said in a press release.
But if money were no object, many folks would choose to hunker down in a tropical paradise, TomTom said. As part of a promotion, the company is asking adventurous travelers to sign up for its Map Paradise Project. TomTom will then select five families or groups of friends to spend two weeks on a tropical island and earn $15,000 for mapping it. The plan is to help create five new navigable maps for Fiji, St. Lucia, Mauritius, Cape Verde, and the Seychelles.
