Jun 2, 2012 08:48 PM

The first woman to lead the Massachusetts State Police plans to retire next month.

Superintendent Marian McGovern announced on Friday night that she’s stepping down after more than 30 years with the state police.

McGovern, a Worcester native, was appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick in December 2009.

In a statement, McGovern said she appreciated the trust Patrick placed in her and said it was an honor to work for the State Police for so long.

Patrick called McGovern’s retirement “a huge loss’’ and hailed her professionalism.

The 58-year-old McGovern did not give a reason for her retirement.
