Scherzer, Tigers mow down Angels

Jul 20, 2012 06:45 AM

The Tigers are rolling thanks to power pitching, clutch hitting, and a touch of grit.

Max Scherzer struck out nine and got plenty of run support as Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila homered to help host Detroit beat the Los Angeles Angels, 5-1, Thursday.

The Tigers won the four-game series and have 10 victories in their last 12 games after slipping a few games under .500 just before the All-Star break.

‘‘When you have a good team, at some point they’re going to play good,’’ Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. ‘‘And, we’re playing pretty good right now.’’

Scherzer (9-5) gave up only one run — on Mike Trout’s homer in the sixth inning — three hits, and four walks over seven innings.

Prince Fielder provided a lift with his bat and hustle in the second inning. He hit a flare down the left-field line and rumbled to second, sliding ahead of the tag and knocking Maicer Izturis way off the bag.

Athletics 4, Yankees 3 — Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer in the first inning and A.J. Griffin shut down one of baseball’s best lineups for five innings as Oakland snapped a nine-game skid at home.

Rays 6, Indians 0 — David Price became the AL’s first 13-game winner, B.J. Upton had three RBIs, and host Tampa Bay shut out Cleveland.

Orioles 4, Twins 3 — Mark Reynolds’s two-run single in the eighth inning backed a strong performance from Wei-Yin Chen and rallied visiting Baltimore.

Mariners 6, Royals 1 — Felix Hernandez won his fourth straight decision and Jesus Montero homered and drove in four runs for visiting Seattle.

Mets 9, Nationals 5 — David Wright homered twice and had five RBIs, R.A. Dickey won his NL-leading 13th game, and New York broke a six-game skid with a victory in Washington.

Padres 1, Astros 0 — Edinson Volquez threw a one-hitter — an infield single in the fourth inning — for the first complete game and shutout of his career as host San Diego beat Houston.
